Transforming the Sacred into the Intimate: The Unseen Thread at Bumi Kinar

By Bagus Ari Maruta, Curated by Studio Nutur

24 August to 22 November 2025

Ubud, Bali – An intangible thread connects past and present, humanity and nature—often invisible to the ordinary eye. That thread is now given visual form by Ubud-born artist Bagus Ari Maruta in his solo exhibition The Unseen Thread: Tracing Spirits, Myths, and Memory, on view at Bumi Kinar, Ubud.

About the Exhibition:

About Bagus Ari Maruta

Maruta interlaces his personal and social experiences—as a father, a member of a traditional community, and a contemporary artist—into a visual language that balances sekala (the seen) and niskala (the unseen). Through color, textiles, and installation, he creates mythological and spiritual landscapes that feel warm and intimate, where mountains, trees, and ancestral legends emerge as familiar yet deeply symbolic presences.

“The Unseen Thread is an artistic journey that unveils layers of memory and spirituality in everyday life, creating a dialogue between the visible and the invisible, transforming what is considered sacred into something that can be loved,” says Bagus Ari Maruta.

The Unseen Thread functions as a portal: a space to listen to what is rarely heard, and to witness what is often unseen. In the intangible threads he weaves, Maruta connects past and present, inviting reflections on fear, reverence, and the quiet beauty of being human. The result is an aesthetic experience that is gentle, intimate, and contemplative.

As an art space, Bumi Kinar is dedicated to presenting and curating works by Balinese artists whose practices explore the intersections of culture, nature, and contemporary life. This exhibition invites visitors to encounter art not only as visual objects, but as a space of spiritual and collective interaction—an invitation to reconsider humanity’s relationship with environment, culture, and mythology. Here, myths and beliefs are not to be feared, but embraced as essential parts of life and affection.
