A Creative Gathering of Materials, Memory and Making
On Saturday, 26 September, BuKi Gallery at Bumi Kinar Ubud welcomed a weekend of hands on creativity through A Weekend of Making, bringing together artists and participants for two intimate workshops exploring different ways of creating and seeing.
Led by Novieta Tourisia and A. Jasmine, the workshops invited participants to work with everyday materials, experiment with new techniques, and discover how a creative process can unfold through making, layering and transformation.
Giving New Life to Leftover Materials
The morning began with a Mixed Media Collage workshop with Novieta Tourisia, inspired by her work Daur Kebunku (My Garden Cycle).
Participants explored the possibilities of materials that might otherwise be left behind, working with recycled paper, fabric scraps, barkcloth and other studio materials to create their own compositions. Embroidery and hand stitching added another layer to the process, bringing texture and a personal touch to each piece.
Rather than beginning with a blank canvas, the workshop encouraged participants to look differently at what was already around them. Through texture, colour, layering and stitch, discarded materials became part of something new.
Drawing by Taking Away
The afternoon continued with Charcoal Drawing Through Erasure with A. Jasmine, inspired by her Hide and Ascend series.
Participants began by building a dark surface with charcoal before using erasers as drawing tools. Instead of adding lines to create an image, they gradually revealed forms, light and spaces by taking material away.
The process opened up a different way of thinking about drawing, allowing unexpected shapes and textures to emerge through each erased mark. It was an exploration of light and shadow, gesture and composition, while reflecting on how landscapes can carry traces of memory and fleeting moments.
Two Artists, Two Ways of Making
NOVIETA TOURISIA
A. JASMINE
Although the two workshops approached art from very different directions, both shared an invitation to look more closely at materials and the creative process.
Novieta Tourisia's practice draws from textiles, barkcloth, paper, natural dyeing and hand stitching, with a strong connection to Indonesian flora, traditional knowledge and stories passed between generations. Her work reflects an ongoing relationship between making, nature, care and memory.
A. Jasmine works across visual art, branding and graphic design, exploring expressive visual languages and themes of liminality. Her practice embraces research, experimentation and the possibilities that emerge through the process of making.
Together, their workshops offered two distinct perspectives: one that transforms what has been left behind, and another that reveals what lies beneath the surface.
A Weekend of Making
More than a series of art activities, A Weekend of Making created a space for participants to experiment, work with their hands and experience the creative process for themselves.
From fragments of paper and fabric to layers of charcoal and erased marks, each workshop offered a reminder that art can begin with what is already around us. Sometimes, creating means bringing different pieces together. Sometimes, it means taking something away.
The weekend at BuKi Gallery was a celebration of both approaches, and of the stories, textures and possibilities that can emerge when we make something with our own hands.
